Surroundings
Urk:
Southwest of the Holiday Park, 2.5 km away, you will find the picturesque fishing village of Urk. This 1000-year-old former island can call itself the largest fishing center in Western Europe. A fresh fish meal in one of the local restaurants is wonderful for fish lovers. Climb up to the lighthouse and admire the fishermen's monument. In the old town is a fishing museum, where you can go back in time. There is an Urker living room, an original ship's shop and an arrangement of life-size dolls in the old Urker costumes. The whole village still breathes the atmosphere of the past. The old village center of Urk has characteristic buildings, narrow streets (the ginkies) and old fishermen's houses with green painted facades. In the past, fishing nets and clean laundry hung between the houses to dry. During the Whitsun weekend the inhabitants still wear the typical Urk costume. Do you want to take into account the local Sunday celebration? The IJsselmeer fish is mainly supplied by ships in the Urk harbor and traded via the IJsselmeer fish auction Urk. This fish auction is located in the harbor area. This is still the "old system". The IJsselmeer fish auction Urk is open to the public at set times. In the spring, the landed fish is weighed and registered from 1.30 pm. From 2 p.m., the fish is sold in the "mininghall". It is always nice to see how the process of supply and demand works during an auction.
Schokland (approx. 15 km from the motorhome park)
At the Schokland museum and visitor center De Gesteentetuin, the centuries-old history comes to life. On the former island of Schokland, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, where the wind plays with your hair and the vastness of the sea attracts attention, the battle against the water is still tangible. But the sea is no more. Schokland has been an island on dry land since the land reclamation in 1942. Come and discover the special Schokland. Museum restaurant Schokland welcomes you with delicious coffee or a tasty lunch.
Municipality of Noordoostpolder (around Urk)
Human hands have expelled the water, but without water the polder has no right to exist. Elongated fields, in every season different in color and crop, wind that sometimes gently, sometimes firmly, blows through your hair. Whichever corner of the polder you are in; always that characteristic dike in the distance that borders the 'new land'. Noordoostpolder is located no less than 6 meters below sea level (NAP). You literally walk on the seabed. The water from the former Zuiderzee has been pumped away and the seabed has been cultivated by thousands of pioneers. And you can still find that story everywhere. The polder was completely designed on the drawing board. Clean lines formed the landscape and you can still see it today. From the air, the fields look like a Mondrian painting, especially when the enormous tulip fields bloom in spring.
Nature
Flevoland may be the youngest province in the Netherlands, but it is also the largest polder in the world and offers incredibly beautiful nature. Scattered throughout Flevoland you will find a new form of wilderness. You literally walk on the seabed through forests and wetland nature reserves. Discover where to spot wildlife, go out with a ranger and admire World Heritage Sites.
